About Total Learning Center LLC
Total Learning Centers is a privately owned, academic, brain-based learning facility in the Pittsburgh, Pa., area. TLC offers one-on-one tutoring in an open, child-friendly environment for clients ages 5 through adult. Founded in 1999, by Drs. Joe and Carol Utay, TLC prepares students today for success tomorrow through direct, intensive, research-based methods to ensure significant gains in reading, writing, math, attention, processing, working memory and more. Dr. Joe Utay, director of counseling and evaluation services for TLC, is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh, served three terms as president of the Kentucky Mental Health Counselors Association, is a former professor for the University of Kentucky, Eastern Kentucky University and Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and is a school psychologist, marriage and family therapist, author, father, and, along with a black belt in kung fu, is a long-time tai chi practitioner with students.
Dr. Carol Utay, executive director of TLC, is a graduate of the University of Pittsburgh and an expert in learning with a doctorate in special education. Carol has experience as a principal, Orton-Gillingham reading therapist, teacher, consultant, international speaker, professor, author, and mother. She is a founding board member of the Western Pennsylvania International Dyslexia Association (IDA) and board member of Pennsylvania IDA. Carol is also a nationally recognized Athena Award winner for community service and an avid Internet-based education community builder.
