One of his first pieces, the Maple Leaf Rag, became ragtime's first and most influential hit, and remained so for a century. His parents, Louis and Ruth Rosenquist of Swedish descent, were amateur pilots and moved from town to town to look for work, finally settling in Minneapolis.

In 1933, he graduated from college and moved to New York where he was able to get a few arranging assignments for clients including Benny Goodman and radio conductor Al Goodman who had a pops concert program. Joaquim Antonio da Silva Calado, the band-leader of Choro Carioca, revolutionized the style by emphasizing virtuoso playing and improvisation, and by introducing the cavaquinho and the violao (a seven-string guitar). His operas and sacred works displayed a richness and majesty (the French-style Ouverture being one of his contributions) which would attract the interest admiration of audiences, and visiting musicians from Italy and Germany.
