Focusing Attention for Complete Thinking

Get Control Over Internal and External Distractions

FACT's Pay Attention! curriculum systematically trains students to control external distractions. Through a series of challenging tasks, Pay Attention! strengthens skills needed for sustaining attention, increasing speed of information procesing, shifting attention between multiple tasks, and paying attention to multiple sources of information at a time.

Signs Your Teen Should Be Tested

Difficulty sustaining concentration
Fails to listen even when spoken to directly
Does not complete tasks
Actively avoids and clearly dislikes activities that demand sustained focus without high interest
Loses things
Easily distracted and may forget routine tasks
More restless than peers

FACT's Mindfulness curriculum helps participants re-focus their attention when distracted by their internal, often intelligent and creative (as well as overly worried and sensitive), thoughts.

Mindfulness involves three basic steps:

  • 1. Bringing nonjudgmental attention to an "anchor" such as each breath or the teacher
  • 2. Noticing when distraction occurs
  • 3. Gently refocusing on the "anchor"
